Autumn leaves can quickly collect in gutters and block water flow. A simple ground-level check after heavy rain can help you spot problems early, without putting yourself at risk on a ladder.
BEFORE YOU DIVE IN
How would you like to start your roofline check?
Look for signs after rainfall
Watch from a safe position for water spilling over the gutter edge, leaks at joints or water running down exterior walls. These can indicate debris, a blocked downpipe, a damaged joint or a problem with gutter alignment.
Check the ground around downpipes
Look for pooling, unusual splashing or water that appears not to be draining away. Do not dismantle a downpipe or reach into a drain if you cannot do so safely. Persistent blockages may need a professional to investigate.

Cleaning is not the same as repair
Loose brackets, sagging gutters, cracks and leaking joints may need repair rather than another clean. Tell the service provider about any signs of damage and ask whether repair work is included in the quote.
Do not take risks at height
Avoid leaning out from ladders, climbing onto roofs or working in wind and wet conditions. A trained provider with appropriate access equipment is the safer option for high or awkward properties.
A visual check is not a substitute for a professional inspection where damage or unsafe access is suspected. Images are illustrative, not before-and-after evidence or a promised result.
