Timber or composite?
Look for the installer’s or manufacturer’s care guide. Composite boards can have specific restrictions on pressure, heat and chemicals. Timber cleaners and oils are not automatically suitable for composite or painted fencing.
The simplest useful kit
Remove loose leaves with a surface-appropriate brush. Use a compatible cleaner only when needed, following dilution and rinse instructions. Avoid wire brushes or aggressive jets that can damage fibres or coatings.

- A controlled hose rinse where permitted.
- Protection specified by the product label.
Aftercare is a separate decision
Oils, stains and protective coatings are different products. Check compatibility with the existing finish, preparation requirements and drying conditions. Test a small hidden area; cleaning does not mean a new coating is required.
When not to DIY
Loose boards, rot and unstable fences need repair, not another cleaning product. Arrange an assessment before washing a damaged surface or working near electrical equipment.
