Exterior cleaners and sprayers: match the surface

Updated 31 October 2026 · Free to read

An “outdoor” label is not enough. Painted walls, render, cladding and natural stone have different limits. Match the product, applicator and surface instructions before purchasing.

01

Identify what you are cleaning

Check the surface material, finish and existing damage. Ask the installer for guidance when possible. Do not assume a cleaner used on paving is suitable for render, aluminium or painted timber.

02

Check the product and applicator together

Verify the permitted surfaces and application method on the label. Sprayer seals, hoses and containers must be compatible with the chemical; a general garden sprayer is not automatically suitable.

  • Labelled surface compatibility.
  • Application, dilution and rinse instructions.
  • Seal and hose chemical compatibility.
  • Protection and disposal instructions.

03

Protect the surroundings

Plan where rinse water will go and follow label and local requirements. Keep people, pets and planting away as directed. Never mix chemicals or transfer them into food or drink containers.

04

Stop when the problem is not dirt

Cracking, flaking paint, persistent staining or suspected graffiti on delicate finishes may need specialist assessment. Cleaning will not fix failed coatings or water penetration.

Choose the surface-safe method first, then compatible products and equipment. Avoid universal-cleaner assumptions.
