Soft Washing: Equipment and Product Selection Guide

Updated 11 October 2026 · Free to read

Soft washing uses low-pressure application and appropriate cleaning solutions to treat organic growth on suitable exterior surfaces. The method and product must match the material, and chemical handling is important.

01

Soft washing is not just low pressure

The approach combines surface assessment, appropriate chemistry, controlled application and correct rinsing or dwell time as directed by the product label. A pressure washer turned down is not automatically a complete soft-wash system.

02

Assess the surface and surroundings

Check the manufacturer's care instructions for render, cladding, roofs and natural stone. Protect plants, people, pets, vehicles and neighbouring property. Prevent uncontrolled runoff and never use chemicals near watercourses or drains contrary to the label or local rules.

Equipment to consider

Equipment may include a compatible low-pressure applicator, suitable hoses, measured containers and personal protective equipment specified by the chemical supplier. Compatibility matters: not every pump, seal or hose is suitable for every solution.

  • Low-pressure application equipment compatible with the product.
  • Accurate measuring equipment where dilution is required.
  • Product-specified gloves, eye protection and other PPE.
  • Rinse and runoff-management equipment suitable for the job.
04

Product label and safety

Read the label and safety data sheet before use. Never mix chemicals, use unlabelled containers or improvise concentrations. Follow the specified dilution, contact time, ventilation, PPE, storage and disposal instructions. If the product is not clearly approved for the surface, do not use it.

Choose the cleaning product and equipment together, following the label and safety data sheet. Roof and façade work at height, or work involving hazardous chemicals, is best left to trained and properly equipped professionals.

Prices, product availability and specifications change. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use suitably equipped professionals for safety-sensitive work. Images are illustrative, not before-and-after evidence or a promised result.
