Before you accept a cleaning quote: ask these 8 questions

Updated 11 October 2026 · Free to read

A quote should help you understand exactly what you are buying. If two prices look very different, the providers may be offering different work. Use these questions to compare fairly and avoid surprises on the day.

BEFORE YOU DIVE IN

How would you like to get clearer on your quote?

01

What exactly is included?

Ask which surfaces and areas are included, whether edges and difficult-to-reach sections are covered, and whether rinsing, debris removal or re-sanding is part of the job. Put any important detail in writing.

02

Is this the final price?

Ask whether the figure is fixed or an estimate. If an on-site inspection could change it, ask what would cause a change and whether the provider will seek your approval before doing extra work.

03

What method will you use?

The answer should make sense for the surface. High pressure can damage pointing, coatings, timber and some stone. Ask what precautions will be taken and whether any chemical treatment is included.

04

Are there extra charges?

Clarify travel, waste removal, equipment hire, treatment products, VAT where applicable and any follow-up visit. Do not assume an advertised starting price includes every part of the job.

05

What happens if weather interrupts?

Some work needs suitable weather and drying conditions. Agree how postponements are handled and whether any payment is refundable if the work cannot safely proceed.

06

Who is responsible for damage?

Ask about insurance and how existing damage will be recorded. Take your own dated photos before work starts, especially around fragile surfaces, windows, lights and garden features.

07

How and when do I pay?

Agree payment timing in advance and get a receipt. Be cautious about last-minute changes to bank details or pressure to pay cash without a clear record.

08

Can I take time to compare?

A trustworthy provider should be comfortable with reasonable questions. Compare the written scope, not only the headline price, and do not feel obliged to book during a doorstep visit.
